Why do I think I can do this Job?
With over 1000 hours clocked in at St Andrews Students Association over the last 4 years, I can say I know the tech pretty much inside out. I've worked as an event manager on everything from Tinchy Stryder to student run versions of Take Me Out, and enjoyed every minute. Some of my highlights have included getting to the end of Freshers Week 2012, the first Freshers' I had a big hand in organising, and transforming Venue 1 from Shakespeare's Troilus and Criseyde to a Goldfish DJ set in half an hour.
I would say my primary skill would be as a lighting designer, rigger and operator. With over three years experience building various designs, programming those set-ups into the lighting desk, before using that program to make the event run smoothly. I also have experience running sound, usually for speech rather than live music although I have ran the board for band nights before.
As an Ent (the union's volunteer tech crew), I also have experience working with many Union societies and sub-committees to make their events happen. It is our aim to produce events that match the group's vision as closely as possible. Through this I've developed the interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with people, whether they are colleagues with years of experience, a new member waiting to be trained, or an organiser looking to make their event the best it can possibly be.
Equally, the extent and variety of events I've been involved with - whether teching, managing or organising - gives me an intimate understanding of the requirements and limitations of putting on an event. I feel this experience will be invaluable for my future in this industry.

Positions Held
Ents Equipment Officer
April 2011 - March 2012 Ents Technical Coordinator March 2012 - March 2013 Freshers' Week Coordinator 2012-13 Union DJ 2010-14 Event Managers |
Responsible for making sure the Union's entertainment equipment was working and keeping it properly maintained. Also made sure any hired equipment was looked after and then returned in good condition.
Due to reshuffling of the committees responsibilities, Equipment and Training officers were merged into a single role. So on top of the Equipment Officer's duties I was also in charge of ensuring the health and safety of crew members and that they have had adequate training. Advisor to the Director of Events and Services: making sure Freshers' ran smoothly, hiring equipment to make it work, advising on technical aspects, ensure the crew aren't too over worked (they are volunteers after all) and advising on the general line-up of the week. Since learning how to DJ from my mentor in Ents, I've been a regular staple of the bop. Now I've diversified into doing more Rewind and private gigs but I still love the feeling you can only get from the Venue 1 Stage. Every event in the union gets an Event Manager (EM) assigned by Ents. Over the four years I've been involved in more events than I can count including: Bops, Sin Citys, Rewinds, Ceilidhs, Chinese New Year, St Andrews Got Talent, Bute Review, Take Me Out, Itchy Feet and Tinchy Stryder. |
